PDEU was established as a Petroleum University in 2007 with a focus on fossil fuels and later emerged as India's only energy university in the year 2021, dedicated to energy education and research. Today, the university has marked its presence as a renowned institution with noteworthy national and international visibility. It is aggresively contributing towards Nation's AatmaNirbharBharat Abhiyan.

In its short journey, it has become first Private University in Gujarat to achieve NAAC A++ Accreditation. It also received GRADED AUTONOMY by UGC under Category II in 2018 and updated to Category I in 2024. It is also awarded status of Centre of Excellence by Govt. of Gujarat in 2022.

Equipped with facilities like no other, the university caters to more than 9500+ students, including 270+ students from 40 foreign countries and 500+ faculty and Staff. “PDEU has developed a vibrant campus with advanced facilities and technologies on its campus. It has set up state-of-the-art laboratories in each discipline with support from industries, knowledge partners, and internationally renowned University partners”. The university imparts holistic education through four schools i.e. School of Management, School of Technology, School of Energy Technology and School of Liberal Studies.

With an idea to transform the energy and potential of young students, the PDEU Innovation and Incubation Center (IIC) was established in 2014. It was then legally registered as a Section 8 company in 2017 to support budding entrepreneurs, innovators, and technologists to drive business ventures and initiatives. For 3 consecutive years, from 2017 to 2019, the center was recognized as the “Incubation Centre of the Year with Prominent IP Culture” by the Intellectual Property Protection Organization (IPPO) in IP Fest.

Apart from this, it has 16 Centres of Excellence including the new ones in the areas of Solar PV Panel Manufacturing, Biodiesel production, Energy Storage, Carbon Capture and Sequestration, Green Hydrogen and Next Generation Computing.

Inception of PDPU

This modern-day university was the vision of Gujarat's then Chief Minister Shri Narendra Modi. During 1st Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit held in 2003, Gujarat Energy Research and Management Institute (GERMI) was set up, which in turn led to the birth of PDEU as a Private University through the State Act enacted on 4th April 2007.   Started with a vision to address the need for trained human resources for Oil & Gas sector, the University offered multiple courses in the domains of Engineering, Sciences, Arts and Management along with maximum exposure and opportunities to its students through various national and international exposure programs/ internships with Best Universities worldwide.

Transformation from PDPU to PDEU   “I am glad to see PDPU is creating its own identity, not just in the country but also in the world. And iam very proud to see that this university is far ahead of its time. In the last one and a half decade, the PDPU has expanded in many spheres, including the energy spectrum, besides the petroleum sector. Given the progress of PDPU today, i would request the Gujarat Government to rename it from Petroleum University to Energy University by amending laws.”
